Governor Hochul Announces Plan for 3,000 Affordable Homes In New York

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a statewide investment to create or preserve nearly 3,000 affordable, energy-efficient homes across New York State, with over $600 million allocated to six projects located in New York City. The funding is part of a broader $1 billion award from New York State Homes and Community Renewal, which includes $560 million in tax-exempt bonds and $466 million in subsidy funding. These six city-based developments are among 15 projects statewide advancing under the Governor’s five-year, $25 billion Housing Plan to develop or preserve 100,000 affordable homes.

In The Bronx, $23 million will support the rehabilitation of Kittay House, a 295-unit senior housing development in Fordham originally built in 1969. The project includes upgrades to shared facilities such as a kitchen, dining hall, recreation rooms, and a doctor’s office. Brooklyn will see funding for two developments: Alafia Phase 2 in East New York will receive $326 million to build two 14-story mixed-use buildings with 634 residential units and more than 12,000 square feet of commercial space, including 47 supportive housing units; and Emerson Davis Apartments in Clinton Hill, a $40 million 12-story building with 103 affordable and supportive units.

In Queens, $142 million has been allocated for the construction of Edgemere Commons, an 18-story, mixed-use development in Far Rockaway with 244 apartments, nearly 4,000 square feet of commercial space, and community amenities such as a daycare facility. Manhattan will receive $63 million to rehabilitate the historic Westbeth Artist Housing in the West Village, which contains 385 live-work units for artists and 73 commercial spaces. Also in Manhattan, the Jericho House will undergo a $9 million rehabilitation and expansion, increasing capacity to 56 units exclusively for formerly homeless individuals.

“I applaud this significant investment in affordable housing, including this critical project right here in Yonkers, as part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring safe, modern, and affordable homes across every region of New York State,” said New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “We look forward to continuing our collaborative work with Governor Hochul and the Assembly to build on this progress and create even greater housing opportunities for all New Yorkers.”…
