Syracuse Police warn of heat risks for kids, pets in cars

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — Hot temperatures present a well-known danger for children and pets in locked, parked vehicles during the summertime. They face severe risks, such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or death, when left alone without air conditioning.

“Kids have died in the backs of cars, and several animals, from being left inside the car,” Sergeant Thomas Blake, with the Syracuse Police Department, said.

The temperatures can rise quickly. Sgt. Blake tested the limits by sitting in his vehicle for approximately 10 minutes and discovered that the temperature rose from 60 to 120 degrees…
