ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — Homeowners in New York are supposed to see more money in their pockets this summer and fall as the state’s school tax relief program, STAR, rolls out its second phase of benefits. Almost 3 million New Yorkers should expect over $2.2 billion in total tax relief through checks or direct deposits, according to Governor Kathy Hochul.
The STAR program helps homeowners pay school property taxes if they’re eligible. It offers two ways to receive benefits: an exemption lowers the school tax bill directly, or a credit in the form of a check or direct deposit from the state. The credit can increase by up to 2% a year, but the value of the exemption can’t increase.
