Police union leader should lower the heat after combative Armory Square comments (Editorial Board Opinion)

The Syracuse police union leader went too far when he urged his members patrolling the city’s Armory Square bar district to, in effect, disregard the department’s use of force policy.

“De-escalation is out the window for this weekend, and I will back you to the hilts!” wrote Joseph Moran, president of the Police Benevolent Association, in a July 18 Facebook post.

This followed a July 13 post calling Armory Square “chaotic” and claiming “perpetrators and gangbangers have infiltrated the bar scene on Friday and Saturday nights.”…
