Space tool from East Syracuse that landed on the moon in running for NY’s ‘Coolest Thing’

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)– A product manufactured at INFICON in East Syracuse is in the running to be named the “Coolest Thing Made in New York.”

Voting in the first round of the “Coolest Thing in New York” contest began July 28 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 3. Winners advance to the Sweet 16 in a tournament-style bracket, with a champion announced in September and selected to be a site included on the Business Council’s statewide manufacturing tour in October.

The Transpector MPH, built in East Syracuse in 1992, is designed for microchip manufacturing, but is also used on space missions, inside volcanoes, and near earthquake fault lines. It is a mass spectrometer gas analyzer that identifies molecules, chemical reactions, and leaks we cannot see. It’s used in extreme environments because of its hypersensitivity and reliability.

In March, the Transpector became the first commercial mass spectrometer to land on the moon and the first one, since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, targeted to measure water and other resources on the moon…
