Community group urges EPA to force Syracuse to declare emergency over lead in water

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Families for Lead Freedom Now filed a legal petition that urges the Environmental Protection Agency to force New York State and Syracuse to address the city’s “lead water crisis.”

The organization describes itself as a community group that advocates for families who were directly affected by childhood lead poisoning in the city.

Specifically, the petition requests that the EPA use its emergency powers under the Safe Drinking Water Act to force the city to declare a State of Emergency, provide appropriate at-the-tap water filters, launch a public education campaign and engage the community in creating a plan to remove lead-hazards, prioritizing the most lead-burdened communities…
