Syracuse teen charged in Weedsport burglary and vehicle thefts

An 18-year-old from Syracuse is facing multiple felony charges after a string of thefts and a home burglary in Cayuga County last week.

According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies on patrol in the Village of Weedsport early on August 5 spotted a running, unoccupied vehicle. After confirming it had been reported stolen from Syracuse, they began receiving calls about thefts from other vehicles in the area — and then a report of a burglary just outside the village in the Town of Brutus.

Deputies say Deantae Simmons had stolen the vehicle and then, after seeing law enforcement nearby, abandoned it and began entering unlocked vehicles throughout Weedsport, stealing items. He then entered an occupied home in Brutus, stole a set of car keys, and fled in the homeowner’s vehicle…
