Couple Sues New York For $10 Million After Beloved Pet Squirrel Is Killed

According to Geoff Herbert of Syracuse.com, an Upstate New York couple is taking legal action against the state after the death of their cherished pet squirrel, P’Nut. Mark Longo and Daniela Bittner filed a $10 million lawsuit following the October 2024 seizure and euthanasia of P’Nut and a pet raccoon named Fred by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Department of Health.

The animals were taken from the couple’s Pine City home after officials alleged they were keeping wildlife without proper permits. The DEC claims P’Nut bit an officer through thick gloves during the raid, triggering a mandatory rabies test. Both animals were killed and tested—results came back negative.
