Central NY native, a former top bobsledder, dies swimming in Adirondack lake

Harrietstown, N.Y. – A Central New York native who was on multiple U.S. national bobsled teams has died in the Adirondacks in an apparent drowning.

John D. Cogar, 76, originally from Auburn, went missing last Thursday evening in Harrietstown, according to a State Police news release.

Cogar jumped into the water from a pontoon boat just north of Eagle Island on Lower Saranac Lake and did not resurface, according to troopers and the state Department of Environmental Conservation. A boater contacted police at about 6 p.m…
