NYSDOT uses explosives to implode ground near I-81 project site

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Drivers on I-81 didn’t know it, but for the past couple weeks, they were being held back from a planned implosion in the construction zone up ahead.

Traffic was slowed or halted because contractors were blowing up rock ground as part of the I-81 redesign project near the highway’s southern interchange south of Syracuse.

“There’s a lot of science that goes into it,” the DOT’s Engineer-In-Charge Jim Harmon said, “but also the coordination between the blaster and the contractor and DOT and State Police.”…
