Mayor Walsh denounces ‘speeding epidemic’ after cameras catch speeders 60,000 times

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A month after the city government installed 28 speed cameras near school zones across Syracuse, the results are in: in their first two weeks, the cameras caught speeders close to 60,000 times.

A report released on Oct. 2 found that the speed cameras issued around 59,950 speeding warnings as of Sept. 30. One driver sped 78 mph in a 25 mph zone, the highest speed out of all of the incidents the cameras recorded. Out of those thousands, 31% involved drivers speeding over 15 miles per hour over the limit.
