Syracuse could see millions from cameras catching speeders in school zones

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — While Syracuse police have insisted that the speed zone cameras installed near local schools in September were not intended as a moneymaker, recent data shows that speeding fines could prove lucrative for the city.

A month from now, anyone caught on camera speeding through Syracuse school zones will be fined $50 for their first offense. New school zone speed cameras have clocked close to 60,000 warnings to drivers going over the speed limit in the first two weeks.

If all warning violations sent out were actual fines, that would add up to three million dollars, with half of the amount going towards the city’s general fund. A recent report from the city counted 59,950 speeding warnings and 430 warnings for drivers running red lights…
