Syracuse car thefts drop by 50% in 2025, but university area remains a hot spot

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — City of Syracuse Common Councilor Rasheada Caldwell had her car stolen on Tuesday night. This makes her one of the more recent victims of stolen vehicles. While car thefts have decreased dramatically in the city of Syracuse compared to last year, they’re clearly still happening.

In October 2024, the city of Syracuse had seen over 1,000 car thefts that year. In 2025, around 50% less has occurred in the city. According to the Syracuse Police Department, around 500 stolen vehicles were reported this year.

Police data showed that the hot spot for car thefts was in the Syracuse University area. Kieran Coffey, Public Information Specialist for the Syracuse Police Department, said they found many students leaving their keys in their vehicles. Thus making it easier for thieves to steal cars…
