SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Two SUNY Upstate Medical University employees, known as Alcibiades Lazaro Ramirez Gonzalez and Yannier Vazquez Hildago, are being held in Batavia after being detained by the Immigration Enforcement Office in Mattydale on Oct. 29.
“This was a hearing that they were attending because they were told to attend, and they’re trying to do everything the right way,” President of the United University Professions chapter at Upstate Medical University, Mindy Heath, said. “They’ve been attending hearings all along. Why they were picked up at this one, we don’t know.”
Gonzalez and Vazquez Hildago have been described by Heath as proud union members. They were building a life together in North Syracuse while working to obtain permanent citizenship in the United States. The couple recently married…
