After federal agents detained 3 Upstate hospital workers, their colleagues worry who’s next

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Mahamed Fofana had recently completed his training orientation at Upstate Medical University Hospital, which took several weeks. He was going to start work yesterday, Nov. 12.

But it was not meant to be.

Third Upstate Hospital worker detained by federal immigration officers

Fofana, who had come to the United States seeking asylum from Guinea, was detained by federal agents on Tuesday while walking around the Hawley-Green neighborhood, where he lives.

In October, two of his colleagues, Alex Gonzalez and Yan Vazquez, were also taken by federal agents. Gonzalez and Vazquez were a married couple seeking asylum from Cuba; ICE detained them as they waited for their immigration hearings. Now, all three men are held in a detention facility in Batavia that attorneys have condemned for medical neglect.
