Rare Seahorse could be first Onondaga Co. Aquarium animal

An international search is underway to populate the Onondaga County Aquarium at the Syracuse Inner Harbor, with officials revealing that a rare Western Australian seahorse will be among the first procurements.

These seahorses, known for their distinctive brown lines along the snout and size of up to 22 centimeters, inhabit the rocky edges of sponge gardens and reef habitats in Australia.

At a Monday meeting of the Onondaga Civic Development Corporation, it was disclosed that most of the saltwater animals for the aquarium will be caught in the wild, necessitating the start of the process now to comply with international approvals. The aquarium is slated to open late next summer…
