DMV makes major changes to point system: Drivers can lose licenses faster now

New rules from the New York State DMV mean drivers could now lose their license faster — and rack up more points for common traffic violations.

Under the updated system, licenses can now be suspended after a driver accumulates 10 points within 24 months. Previously, the threshold was 11 points in 18 months. Several violations now carry stricter penalties. For example, driving up to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit will now cost drivers 4 points instead of 3. Using a cell phone while driving has increased from 5 to 6 points. Failing to yield to a pedestrian now results in 5 points, up from 3, and reckless driving carries one of the steepest increases, jumping from 5 to 8 points.

Other updates include new penalties for minor speeding in construction zones, which can now result in points. Equipment violations such as broken tail lights will add 1 point each. Illegal U-turns and obstructing traffic both count for 2 points. Drivers who fail to move over for emergency vehicles will now receive 3 points…
