ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)—The new year will be bring new protections for seniors who are at risk of being a scam victim.
Starting in January, the New York State Office For Aging will be rolling out new technology. It’s called SilverShield and it helps people determine if an email or a text message they’ve received is fraudulent. Greg Olsen, director of the New York State Office For Aging, shared how it will work.
“So, if you get an alert, I’ll give you an example because I get them all the time, that I didn’t pay my Thruway toll and there will be a link in there. I simply forward it on to SilverShield and it will spit back for me, based on the language and the technology that they use, how likely the risk is that this is a scam,” explained Olsen.
