New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Law will not affect life insurance benefits

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Now that the governor of New York plans to sign into law the medical aid in dying legislation, there are questions about the life insurance policy of an individual who selects to die in this manner.

Peg Sandeen, CEO of Death with Dignity, says the language in New York’s legislation is explicit in protecting policyholders and their beneficiaries.

“The language that New York legislators adopted is very clear,” Sandeen said. “Using medical aid in dying can have no impact on a life insurance policy in New York. That protection is extremely important.”…
