ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — New Yorkers have several new laws taking effect on January 1, 2026. The 14 updates below offer a wide range of effects and goals, including affordability, wages, businesses transparency, and insurance coverage for cancer and allergy treatments.
Dating back to the 2023/2024 legislative session, S995B/A3484A, became law in late 2024. But some elements of this LLC Transparency Act only take effect on New Year’s Day. It makes private businesses known as limited liability companies list their real owners in a state database so the state can accurately track who actually runs the business and who profits. The Secretary of State can grant waivers to the public database requirements over significant privacy interests like being in a victim protection programs, for example.
Local and foreign businesses alike have to file reports that name anyone with significant control over the company, including their president, chief executive officer, chief financial officer, chief operating officer, and general counsel. The requirements also extend to anyone with the power to appoint or remove senior officers or a majority of the board of directors, and anyone with with at least a 25% share of the company.
