Whiteout snow & wind sends big rigs and plows off roads, more snow coming to CNY

Syracuse, N.Y. – A combination of heavy snowfall and high wind gusts overnight led to a nasty morning commute in Syracuse and Central New York. The heavy lake effect snow will persist southeast of Lake Ontario in narrow bands this morning before weakening to lighter snow later in the day. This should improve travel for a short period, as additional heavy snow accumulation is forecasted later this evening.

During our morning newscast on NBC3 and CBS,5, we were traveling the roads to show live conditions with Weather Authority One when we came upon this, a large snowplow off the road. This scene happened under an intense snow band on the exit ramp from the New York State Thruway to 690 north. Reports of additional cars off the roadway on this scene, which was quickly cleared.
