New York widens foam, plastic ban

Foam takeout boxes and tiny hotel shampoo bottles just got the boot statewide, according to Spectrum News 1. As of Jan. 1, New York expanded its ban on polystyrene foam food containers and single-use plastic personal care bottles.

The updated rules bar food service businesses from using foam containers meant for cold storage, like coolers and ice chests. Hotels, motels, and similar lodgings with fewer than 50 rooms can no longer offer plastic bottles under 12 ounces for items like shampoo, conditioner, or soap…
