Businesses speak on impact of temporary bridge in Brewerton

BREWERTON, N.Y. — It will be the first of its kind in New York State and only the second in the country, and it’s right here in Central New York. A new bridge in Brewerton off of Route 11 is coming in December 2026. This is part of a $33.6 million project announced by Governor Kathy Hochul.

In the 11 month period of construction, a one-way temporary bridge will take drivers over the Oneida River. There is a stoplight on both sides of the bridge, controlling which side of the bridge drivers can use. Tuesday was the first day using the one-way bridge.

The main difference between the existing bridge and the one coming later this year is that the future one will have a gussetless truss. The change is due to aesthetic reasons. At the same time, it also provides costs and construction benefits, according to the Department of Transportation. The temporary bridge has a 230-foot span with a five-foot-long sidewalk…
