Syracuse Man Charged with Manslaughter in Fatal July Crash

A Syracuse man, Zackery M. Kulas, has been charged with manslaughter following a hit-and-run incident that occurred on July 4, 2025, in Sherburne. According to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, Kulas, aged 37, was driving eastbound on State Highway 80 when he struck and killed 59-year-old Jeffrey Maxson, who was walking westbound along the highway.

The investigation into the crash took several months, with authorities working diligently to gather evidence and consult with the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office. As a result, Kulas faces multiple felony charges related to the incident. He is currently held at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, awaiting arraignment.
