More of Syracuse’s Black babies are dying than before: ‘It’s just completely unacceptable’

Syracuse, NY — Syracuse’s Black infant mortality rate has spiked to its highest level in years.

From 2022 to 2024, the city’s Black infant mortality rate was 14 deaths per 1,000 births, the worst three-year period in a decade, and three and a half times higher than the city’s white infant mortality rate.

“It’s just completely unacceptable,” Rebecca Shultz, Onondaga County’s deputy health commissioner, told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. “We are looking for new ways to approach this issue.”…
