Step inside the ghostly remains of a 125-year-old Syracuse steel mill

Geddes, N.Y. — For more than 100 years, Crucible Industries made high-strength specialty steel for the automotive, cutlery, aerospace and tool industries at its mill on Bridge Street in Geddes.

The company was a leader in steels known for their strength, durability and corrosion resistance.

During the mill’s peak in World War II, workers at Crucible produced 75,000 tons of steel a year. Workers here even made steel for the renovation of the Statue of Liberty in the 1980s…
