Lawsuits fly as split between Great Northern Mall’s owners and a housing developer turns ugly

Syracuse, N.Y. – Breakups have a way of turning ugly, and that’s just what is happening with the partnership that was supposed to redevelop the Great Northern Mall in Clay.

The partnership between Syracuse-based Hart Lyman Cos. and Rochester-based Conifer Housing has devolved into a court fight, with dueling lawsuits filed on the same day late last week.

Hart Lyman Cos. — itself a partnership between developers Guy Hart Jr. and Seamus Lyman — bought the vacant mall for $9 million in July 2023. At the time, Hart announced that Conifer had joined as an equal partner to help turn the mall on Route 31 into a huge residential, retail and commercial community…
