At least five homicides in Syracuse solved with help of license plate readers, police department says

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A day after protesters expressed concerns about the privacy of license plate readers in the City of Syracuse, the Syracuse Police Department shared why the technology is beneficial to fighting crime.

To protect the integrity of its investigations and active prosecutions, the Syracuse Police Department wasn’t willing to name specific cases that relied on license plate readers for some form of evidence. But Chief Mark Rusin was able to provide NewsChannel 9 a redacted list with examples, blocking out the case numbers and names of those involved.

Of the seven cases shared, five were homicides that involved vehicles that were detected or identified by the license plate readers deployed in the City of Syracuse.

Some people worry that information gathered by the cameras will end up getting shared with federal ICE agents and used against immigrants…
