Syracuse, N.Y. – Crews have removed 15 heavy concrete panels from a city parking garage shut down after two support columns showed signs of failing.
The wall panels, which weigh about 7,000 pounds each, were lifted off the seven-story structure at the southeast corner of East Fayette and Montgomery streets by a crane on Tuesday as a safety measure.
City officials closed the 550-car garage Nov. 3 and fenced off the sidewalks around it after engineers determined that two steel columns on the Montgomery Street side of the structure have shifted and moved downward. A steel beam helping to hold up the structure had sunk 9 inches into the ground…
