Syracuse rejects plan to cap rent increases & restrict evictions

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Common Council voted not to enact a proposal which would have restricted evictions and cap rent increases by landlords.

It was a tie vote in the council chambers, which meant the Good Cause Evictions proposal failed. The votes are as follows:

  • Councilors Caldwell, Jones-Rowser, Nave & Moore: No Vote
  • Councilors Monto, Ehrenreich, Majok & Williams: Yes Vote

The council made the vote a little after 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon, and after Councilor Moore read a prepared comment, members in the audience began shouting the word “shame” at councilor members.

“I have changed my stance on this a couple times, and I want to explain why I landed where I did. I support tenant stability. I support fairness, but I also support responsible implementation and sound governance. This proposal would apply to landlords who own two properties or more. That is a significant expansion of state law, and it carries real potential consequences for housing supply, small property owners, court operations and neighborhood stability,” said Councilor Donna Moore…
