SOLVAY, N.Y. — The Village of Solvay has its own power company, which means that, typically, utility rates are much lower than in the surrounding areas. However, for February, that has not been the case. For the past month, ratepayers have been paying three times more than normal.
In previous months and the Village standard, the rate per kilowatt is around six cents. Now, it has spiked to over thirty cents due to the supplementary power.
Mayor Derek Baichi said, “The Village of Solvay does not set the rates. The rates are set by N.Y.S.E.G. or the New York State I.S.O. Basically, we pay the open market rates as soon as we go to supplementary power.”…
