Volunteer firefighter shortage raises safety concerns

SYRACUSE, N.Y (WSYR-TV)– Fire officials across Central New York are sounding the alarm over a major decline in volunteer firefighters, calling the situation a growing public safety concern.

During an “emergency meeting” held on Thursday, March 5, members of the Onondaga County Fire Coalition urged the New York State Legislature to pass a law that would allow volunteer firefighters to receive nominal compensation for their time and expenses.
