Lawyer for 22-year-old arrested for rifle at Syracuse University claims client was only near campus for bus stop

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The attorney defending the 22-year-old Cornell University student arrested for having a rifle at Syracuse University said his client was only there because it was a bus stop to Ithaca — not for the location’s proximity to the campus.

In an interview with NewsChannel 9, defense attorney Jordan McNamara said, “He purchased the gun, which he legally purchased at a gun shop, and… taking the bus back to Ithaca.”

22-year-old Mateu Healey-Parera was arrested Saturday evening, March 7, after the university’s Department of Public Safety was tipped off to a suspicious man with a rifle case near Crouse College. Police said Healey-Parera was found on Waverley Avenue, behind the Schine Student Center, around the same time thousands of fans were headed to the Syracuse Orange basketball game at the JMA Wireless Dome, about 1/3 of a mile away…
