I was both saddened and angered after reading about the Nob Hill Apartments. Two lives were lost in what was foreseeable and avoidable, given the conditions at these apartments. In the five years since my aunt Connie Tuori’s brutal death in her apartment at the Skyline Apartments, it seems that nothing has changed. Her death brought awareness to the property’s neglected maintenance, lack of security, fire code violations and poor sanitation. Yet the residents at Nob Hill Apartments are forced to live in the same deplorable conditions, because of the shortage of affordable housing.
Negligent landlords deflect the blame and city officials claim their hands are tied behind their backs because of the current set of tools they have to work with. If the current tools are not sufficient, then new procedures need to be adopted that require stricter compliance with codes and health/safety requirements…
