Onondaga County is expanding a veteran’s cemetery. One grieving daughter says it looks like a mud pit

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A daughter is appalled at her mother’s final resting place after she was buried Wednesday at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Sandra Seabrook said her final goodbyes alongside her family on Wednesday afternoon, only to be shaken with grief the following day when she visited her mother’s grave site.

Following the funeral director’s orders, Seabrook said she was not allowed to be present for her mother’s burial. On Thursday, the family began searching for the grave marker.

“We circled so many times,” Seabrook said. “I said, ‘My mother better not be in that mud pit over there.”

Sure enough, she is.

A spokesperson for the county government said Seabrook’s mother has been laid to rest in a newly expanded section of the cemetery that was added last fall. The area appears to have uneven terrain, with scattered grave markers and debris from winter and spring weather.

The county spokesperson said that the site will look like the rest of the cemetery in the spring and promised families it will be normal by Memorial Day, and that the Seabrook family had known this beforehand. The spokesperson also said that if the expansion was not completed, there would not be enough room for additional plots…
