After howls from clubs, Syracuse cuts the red tape choking music venues:The Syracuse Common Council on Monday unanimously approved an update to a city rule that had been giving headaches to local music venue owners since it was resurrected last summer. The ordinance, which was written in the 1960s, required some city businesses to obtain a new license to host certain types of entertainment for every event. Now venues that hold less than 350 people will have to apply for just one license per year, while larger venues will need to obtain a Large Crowd Event License for each show.
Corrections officer in critical condition after exposure to unknown substance: A Central New York corrections officer is in critical condition after being exposed to an unknown substance saturated on papers that were brought into prison. State Police were called to the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome on Sunday for a report that a visitor brought in โsuspicious materials,โ troopers said. Several correctional officers who handled the papers had symptoms consistent with exposure to a hazardous substance, and three were hospitalized.
