Need $90K for a home improvement project? Syracuse grants target middle-income areas

Syracuse, N.Y. — Residential property owners in two Syracuse neighborhoods can start applying for major home improvement grants of up to $90,000 under the city’s evolving housing strategy.

Following last fall’s launch of a program providing up to $2,500 in matching funds for minor exterior projects in the Salt Springs and Tipperary Hill/Far West Side areas, the city this week has opened up the application process for a new program aimed at supporting more substantial projects.

The new Homeowner Renovation Program, offered via the city’s Housing Strategies Corp., can help homeowners with more expensive projects such as kitchen and bathroom renovations, bedroom reconfigurations, roofing and siding. The program remains limited to the Salt Springs and Tipperary Hill/Far West Side areas, which the city identifies as middle-income areas that typically don’t qualify for federal and state assistance programs…
