A new community center in downtown Wilkeson soft opened Thursday, and will have a local coffee shop serving drinks inside.
The Wilkeson Historical District Basecamp is a community space at 521 Church St. that was created with the vision of supporting local businesses and creating another reason for people to spend time downtown. Jayme Peloli, founder and executive director of the Wilkeson Historical District nonprofit, told The News Tribune in June the center will be focused on “local recreation, visitor services, and downtown activation.”
“WHD Basecamp grew out of a desire to create something positive for Wilkeson at a time when the community has faced so much uncertainty following the Fairfax Bridge closure. The vision was to create a place that feels like it belongs here — somewhere residents can gather, visitors can learn about the area, and people have another reason to spend time downtown,” Peloli said via email to The News Tribune Tuesday.
Clink Coffee Co. partnered with the historical district to serve coffee and beverages inside the center. The business is based in South Prairie with an existing drive-thru and walk up stand in the town.
