Crews have removed the remainder of the old Jerkovich Pier in Gig Harbor, a key milestone before construction of the city’s commercial fishing homeport can begin.
A large red crane was stationed near the pier this week as workers removed the decking from the pier and the pier piles. The work began Sept. 14 and was expected to take roughly two weeks, per the city’s capital improvement projects website. The pier’s removal is mitigation for the future homeport at 3589 Harborview Dr., which means that it’s considered compensation for the homeport’s environmental impacts.
“The public may see a barge crane operating near the shoreline during construction,” the website says. “Ancich Park will remain open to the public throughout the construction activities.”…
