Just north of Vaughn are the quiet trails of Key Central Forest park. Spanning 480 acres of forest and Vaughn Creek, the park protects salmon habitat and is a beautiful spot just outside of Gig Harbor for walkers and equestrians to enjoy.
Similar to 360 Trails, the forested park is managed by Key Pen Parks through a 50-year lease from the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The relationship allows the working forest to be multi-use, simultaneously protecting habitat and establishing trails for recreationalists to explore. It’s also why sections of the park are closed until mid-March for timber harvest.
Logging began Jan. 11, though communication about the timber harvest began the month prior. Paint and flags adorned trees throughout the park, and signage let park-goers know that the harvest would be happening.
The areas being harvested are Unit 7, consisting of 5 acres; Unit 8 (68 acres); and Unit 9 (27 acres). While 7 and 8 are being harvested, the Northwest and Southwest Loop trails will be closed. When Unit 9 is harvested, the Northeast Loop trail will be closed. All trails will open again after the harvest.
