Tacoma leads in cultural access

In 2018, the Tacoma City Council unanimously passed Resolution 40046, which put Tacoma Creates on that fall’s ballot as Proposition 1. Voters decidedly approved its passage, and since then Tacoma Creates has been critical in supporting access to thousands of cultural events and programs that have enriched the city and its communities.

Tacoma was the first city in Washington state to adopt this cultural access program after the 2015 state legislature granted local government the authority to create such a program. This legislative action gave Tacoma city government the authority to raise revenue from a voter-approved sales or tax of one-tenth of one percent which provided the Tacoma Creates funding base.

Now, Mayor Woodards, Deputy Mayor Kiara Daniels, council members Jamika Scott and Kristina Walker are sponsoring an effort to update Tacoma Municipal Code Chapter 1.55, which is the Tacoma Creates program and the one-tenth of one percent sales and use tax.
