Former Washington state employee sentenced for embezzling nearly $900,000

TACOMA, Wash. — A former Washington state employee, Matthew Randall Ping, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for wire fraud after embezzling nearly $900,000 from the State of Washington, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Thursday.

The 48-year-old Olympia resident manipulated credit card payment processing systems and expense review systems to carry out the scheme, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller.

Ping, who pleaded guilty in June 2025 to wire fraud and making a false tax return, worked for the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) since 2009 and was promoted to Management Analyst by 2017…
