New Suquamish Tribal Assistance Program Now Available for Local Families

The Suquamish Human Services Department has announced the launch of the Suquamish Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program (STTP). The program aims to support Suquamish tribal families and increase local control over assistance services. Nehreen Ayub, Human Services Director, said the program will help the tribe address the needs of its members and improve its ability to provide care.

The STTP replaces the state-run Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. It is the first tribally operated TANF program in Washington State designed for Suquamish families and their descendants. The program’s main goals are to reduce reliance on government assistance, encourage healthy lifestyles, support two-parent tribal families, and help families become more self-sufficient.

The STTP offers monthly cash benefits, incentives for achievements such as good grades or employment, and emergency assistance. Eligibility is based on family size, income, and specific needs. The program serves low-income Suquamish tribal families with children and expectant parents in Kitsap, King, Jefferson, Mason, and Pierce counties…
