‘Takes a toll on everybody’: 2 coffee house workers detained by ICE despite permits to work in US, owner says

WILSONVILLE, Ore. (KOIN) – The owner of Elka Bee’s Coffee is down two employees after she said federal immigration enforcement detained them this week and took them to Tacoma.

The men are Jose Alirio Aguilar Fernandez and Carlos Jose Romero Perozo. Sylvia Hartman, their boss and the owner of Elka Bee’s, said they are from Venezuela. But she said they both showed her they had permits to legally work in the United States and were in the process of becoming citizens.

Hartman said on Tuesday she noticed someone unusual in her café, looking into their kitchen. Then she said she got a tip from a customer.

“They heard that ICE was at Safeway, and I’m like, okay, no worries,” she said. “You know, they’re at Safeway. What can I do? And so my employees overheard that and they were like, hey, you know what? We don’t feel comfortable because whether you’re legal or illegal, they’ve been picking up everybody.”…
