Masked Independent Journalist Charged with Felony Assault in Pierce County After Confrontations Over Public Filming Rights

An independent journalist, known for wearing a mask during his reports, has found himself on the wrong side of the law after a series of confrontations with the public and law enforcement. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Blog recounts a month-long scenario where the reporter engaged in activities aimed at testing constitutional rights on public properties, which culminated in his arrest for alleged assault.

It all began on September 19 when deputies were summoned to Lake Spanaway Golf Course due to the presence of an “unwanted person,” later identified as the masked journalist, according to the sheriff’s department blog. He was reportedly not a paying customer but was taking pictures, an act that led to staff members asking him to leave. His intent, it seems, was to entice staff into violating his rights by restricting his ability to film.

The situation escalated when, on September 24, the journalist appeared at the Parkland Spanaway Precinct. He was there to file a complaint and submit records requests as part of his project. Then on October 7, he arrived at the Women’s Washington Corrections Center for Women, where his attempt to film inside caused the crew to initiate a lockdown; the journalist eventually departed voluntarily…
