90-Year-Old Woman Killed in Steilacoom Train Crash Shortly After Being Reported Missing

A fatal train crash in Steilacoom claimed the life of a 90-year-old woman minutes after she and her husband were reported missing on Monday night. According to MyNorthwest, a freight train collided with their vehicle near Union Avenue around 11 p.m., sadly resulting in her death. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office informed KIRO 7 that the couple had just been added to the missing persons list in University Place beforehand.

The woman’s husband, who was also in the car, was rescued by bystanders who acted swiftly upon realizing the car was on the track—before the train struck the vehicle. Despite the tragic outcome for one, the courage of the bystanders was crucial in saving a life. “Steilacoom Public Safety is grateful for the courage of the bystanders who stepped in to help, and for the rapid and professional assistance from many of our area partners”, said the Department of Public Safety in a statement echoed by FOX 13 Seattle.

Authorities, who were already in search of the missing couple, ruled out any suspicion of foul play in the incident. As per reports, the surviving husband was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment and is expected to recover.
