Olympia Ends Flock Camera Use Over Privacy Concerns; Yelm Weighs Next Steps

The City of Olympia has decided to stop its Flock Safety camera program. This follows concerns about privacy after a video showed federal agents detaining a man in downtown Olympia. At a recent city council study session, officials agreed to cover the city’s 15 Flock cameras with hoods to make them nonfunctional. Flock is expected to deactivate the cameras within a day. The city plans to remove the cameras at a later date.

Olympia’s interim police chief said the city asked Flock to turn off the cameras immediately. By the next afternoon, all cameras were covered. There is no timeline yet for when the cameras will be removed. Officials in nearby Yelm are considering whether to suspend their own use of Flock cameras…
