Suspect in Herron Island double homicide appears in court

TACOMA, Wash. — A 63-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his estranged wife and her boyfriend last year appeared in Pierce County Superior Court on Monday, where a judge ordered him to be held without bail.

James Carnagey is charged with three counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of his estranged wife, Wendy Walker Carnagey, 64, and her boyfriend, Chad Malloy, 39. Carnagey pleaded not guilty in court Monday.

Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the bodies at a home on Herron Island on Dec. 11, 2025. Herron Island is small, private island off the Key Peninsula that has about 150 residents.
