Pierce County deputy-involved shooting under investigation in Spanaway

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reports that on March 23, 2025, deputies attempted to arrest a suspect wanted for felony harassment following a domestic incident earlier that day. When deputies tried to stop the suspect’s vehicle near the 17300 block of Pacific Avenue South in Spanaway, the suspect fled and crashed. Deputies reported shots fired at 5:42 p.m.

The Pierce County SWAT team responded, removed the suspect from the vehicle, and provided medical aid before the suspect was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is handling the case. The involved deputy, Carl Roland, age 35, has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The suspect, Thomas M. Quackenbush, was later charged with multiple felonies, including felony harassment, eluding, and possession of an explosive device
