Mundi marks third anniversary at Attapulgus elephant refuge

Some Decatur County residents are born here; others come for work or family. But one resident has gone on quite a journey to call this slice of Southwest Georgia home.

Mundi — a wild-born African savanna elephant — is celebrating her third year at Elephant Refuge North America. On May 12, 2023, she arrived in Attapulgus from Puerto Rico, ending nearly 35 years of isolation.

Born in Zimbabwe and orphaned during a mass culling in the early 1980s, Mundi was brought to the United States as a young calf before being sold into captivity.
